Day 1 :: Prep, Survey, WiFi and Mother’s Day Love

Today is  big one. We are officially starting prep for the painting and minor work we need done before we can move in to the house. The house was built in 1962, and has had a few updates over the years.   We bought it from an older couple that have 5 grown children (around our age) and they have owned the home since the late ’70s. It’s been well maintained and loved.

I feel a kinship with the woman that lived in the house.  Her decorating style is not exactly in sync with mine, but her attention to detail and order seems right on point.  There’s a note above the dryer reminding someone to empty the lint trap. Also, this handy chart in the laundry cabinet:

There’s a great deal of wood paneling, wallpaper and wall colors that we will be parting with soon.  Here are a few shots from the listing photos.

The downstairs rec-room in the house will be left untouched, with one exception.  The ceiling will get a bit of attention.  It has met with the tip of a pool cue many, many, times over the years. Also, those of you that remember The Bart from the old office at 730, should be happy to know that it will soon be relocated to this room.

Prep work step 1 : Wallpaper removal.

The master bath used to look like this:

In just a few hours it was transforming into a blank slate – sans roses.

We also had the property survey completed today. Here’s a look at that mysterious work in action. I don’t know what the man with the tripod does, but he seems both bored and a little concerned about snakes.

Also, against all odds, Comcast showed up today right on time and set up the cable connections and WiFi without incident.  We have an official agreement in the house. I’m not allowed to contact them anymore after last year’s saga getting service at Tiny House.

Today’s lunch-errand (and 4th trip to Home Depot since closing) was to purchase the door that our talented friend will be adding to the master bedroom for access to the giant deck on the back of the house and a ton more light. We also had to buy new locks for… 6 doors.  That’s a lot of damn doors to lock every night before bed, I might be researching an app-controlled solution in the future.

The day also included a stop at the boy’s school for Muffins with Mom and the most adorable handmade card and gift.

Just when I thought the day could not get any better, Mother’s Day flowers also mysteriously showed up at work from the boys. Yes, I’m actually working through all this fun. I’m banking the vacation time for the unpacking/nesting frenzy.

Tomorrow’s adventure will include an early morning trek around Scott Antique Market in search of things we might need for the house.
